Car should rev cleanly to 7,000rpm, giving you more power at every rpm. You have a problem if it only revs that high..
I reckon you've got a knackered air mass meter. Look under your bonnet, above the air filter box is a bunch of wires plugged into a sensor that sits inside the pipe leading from the top of the airbox to the inlet manifold. Unplug this and start the car. There'll be an error light (injector symbol) on the dash but don't worry about this. See how the car drives then. If it is better, then you need a new MAF (mass air flow - measures how much air the engine is getting)..
