156 Diesel help

Hi guys.

I have just had a prang in my 166 and I feel pretty sure it is going to be written off.

Lately i have been considering changing to a deisel, a 159 I had thought, but on reviewing my finances, that may still be a bridge too far!

So, on 156's. After looking at whats about, I have a few questions.

1. Is the JTDm much better than the JTD?
2. If so, is the JTD still a good solid reliable engine?
3. Is it worth going the extra to try to get a revised shape 156, ie is it a much better car or is it simply a new look?
4. What about the old series cars that appear to have a new interior, good value?
5. Will the 2.4 easily achieve 40mpg and if so what will the 1.9 do?
6. Finally, is there anything I should be aware of, build quality issues, engine weaknesses for example?

Thanks in advance for any help, It is much appreciated.

Re: 156 Diesel help

1. Supposedly its better the higher up the rev range you go (thanks to smaller but more valves - think 12v V6 vs 24v V6)

2. JTD is very reliable, probably the most reliable 156 of them all.

3. Its mostly a new look, but you do get the 20V as opposed to the 10v JTD. And a 6-speed box rather than a 5-speed. However, I didn't think my 10v JTD needed anything more than 5 gears, whereas I know my V6 does. The downside is the 20v 6-speed gearbox is not compatible with the Q2 diff, but the 10v 5-speed one is.

4. Depends if you think the new interior is worth the extra or not. There are exterior changes as well that came with the revised interior, no black bits on the bumpers and body-coloured wing mirrors.

5. 2.4 will do 40mpg if you are gentle. AlfaLincs gets 50mpg out of his, I got mine remapped to the hilt and it mostly did 35mpg.

6. Suspension bushes, suspension bushes and suspension bushes. 2.4 will ground out and crack the sump over speed-bumps/uneven roads if you are too fast and the suspension is worn. Don't expect more than 100K out of the clutch, and you'd do well to get that in fact. Boost pipes split, they are almost a serviceable item.

They are a very good car, I'd definitely have another. Probably a 1.9 16v on the balance of things.

Sorry to hear about your 166

Re: 156 Diesel help

It sounds amazing and its a great engine-I reckon the 20 valve must be even better! Just replaced my 2.4 jtd sportwagon 10 valve (chipped to 170/K&N filter) with a 147 1.9 16 valve and I really miss the noise and its more refined than the 4 cylinder.
