156 engine over revving but not on rev counter

Hi, my 156 selespeed has very recently started to sound like it is over revving at higher speeds. The selespeed moves up through the gears at the same speeds as previously but it sounds like the engine is overreving at anything above 50mph. If I take it out of city mode and change gear from 5th down to 4th the rev counter increases but there is no change to engine sound. Same happens again if I take it down into 3rd. Only when I reduce speed to 40mph and take it down into 2nd does engine pitch increase as I would expect. Seems that its not going above 3rd even though rev counter and gear indicator say it is? Looking for advice before garage tells me its an expensive selespeed problem.

Re: 156 engine over revving but not on rev counter

Sounds (no pun intended) a bit odd....the rev counter is sensed off the engine so is likely to reflect a true value...perhaps higher than road speed would indicate, but if this is the case I guess you are looking at a worn-out clutch slipping - they typically do this at higher revs....
