147 Diesel brakes fail - warning
I'm a bit bored, so I thought I'd post this to help any other diesel 147 owners. It may well apply to other diesels.
Under certain circumstances when braking and hitting a bump just right, the brakes would fail on my 147 JTD 8v.
I initially thought that it was the ABS, or other electronics, but it wasn't.
The pedal would seem to go very hard, and I would press it with all my strength, but the car would hardly slow at all.
By releasing and re-applying the brakes a couple of times, they would then start working again.
Apparently the brakes need a vacuum, and on petrol cars they obtain this from the engine, but diesel engines don't give it, so they fit a servo which produces the vacuum for the brakes.
This servo can go faulty, and when you hit a bump, the vacuum fails, along with the brakes.
When I released the brakes, it was allowing the vacuum to re-form after the bump.
