Jumping Gears!

I love my Alfa 147, it's black, comfortable, quick and drains my pockets...last night whilst driving on the motorway I decelerated and my car jumped out of 5th gear. I accelerated, pressed the clutch and it went back in, but every time I decelerated it jumped out again unless I pushed the gear stick forward. It does not affect any other gears...yet!

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and if it can be easily fixed?

Re: Jumping Gears!

Sounds like a syncro sleeve problem, has it been crunching going into gear recently?

Re: Jumping Gears!

I had the same on my old Sud with 2nd gear.
The selector fork had moved on the selector shaft, so when the shaft was in its detent for 2nd gear the gear wasn't actually pushed fully home. If you pushed the lever past the detent it would go fully into gear and stay there... until you lifted off of the throttle, then it jumped straight out.

The Sud box helpfully had a sump plate that allowed reasonably easy access to the inside of the box, most other boxes don't have that.

Re: Jumping Gears!

No it wasn't crunching, it was fine until it jumped out...

Thanks for the advice about the synchro sleeve and selector fork. I will go armed with this info to the garage on Monday.
