What a difference!

Had my 156 for a couple of weeks and happy with it. Had it in for a cambelt and a service yesterday and it's transformed! More power, smoother running, so it's gone from a good car to a great car. It did cost £750 for the work, mind...

The cambelt was last done 17k ago, but it was 3 years ago, so I had it done anyway. I was shocked to see the condition of the tensioner as it was very rusty and almost siezed. The variator was also knackered. A slight rough running and intermittent engine light turned out to be a cracked plug insulator. I also had the dodgy brake pipe - the one you can't see in the engine bay.

Re: What a difference!

It sounds to me as if the cam timing was set on the previous belt change without the use of the timing blocks. Even if the timing is slightly out there will be a loss of performance.

I found this on my 156, I changed the belt myself with the aid of the locks, and I tried to fit them before removing the belt, and the timing was out. Obviously if I had marked the pulleys and done thejob that way, the timing would have been out with the new belt on as well..

And yes the car did drive better afterwards as well.

You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.

Yes, I understand. The last timing belt wasn't done by an Alfa specialist so that makes sense.

Re: What a difference!

thats a lot of cash! The variator obviously effects the performance too so getting that changed would have helped. Sounds like the last time it was done they only did the belt and not the tensioner so well done for getting it done! Just in time by the sounds of it.
