Hi guys, this is my first post on your rather excellent forum
I am hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I had last night on my 156 JTD 10v
I was accelerating at around 50mph in 5th gear, when I suddenly lost drive. The revs went high as if I had dipped the clutch. Then there was a loud whining/rattling sound. I managed to limp to the side of the road, and when I got out of the car there was a strong clutch burning smell.
The symptoms I now have are:
1.) The rattling/whining noise are present whenever the engine is running, regardless of whether the clutch pedal is up or down.
2.) With the engine running, the car will not go into any gear, it just makes a horrible crunching noise.
3.) Without the engine running, the car goes into all gears and the gearbox feels normal. It does this whether pressing the clutch pedal or not.
I think that this points to the clutch rather than the gearbox but do you guys agree?
If it is just the clutch, is is worth fitting an uprated one from CG motorsport on a standard engine? The reason I ask is that the missus drives the 156 most of the time and I don't want a clutch that is much stiffer than standard.
I would really appreciate some help and advice on this guys
