I thought the problem was in the gearbox or possibly a broken clutch plate, apparently the splined center piece can brake away from the
clutch plate, so only one choice, remove the gearbox to have a look.
It was a pig of a job and took me about 5 hours, a lot of swearing and bruises to get the box out.
The problem was a sheared gearbox main shaft broken just before the splines that engage the clutch driven plate.
Not wanting to fork out for a new box i took a rsik and itted a secondhand gearbox (£150) and replaced the clutch and slave cylinder at the same time.
