Re: 147 selespeed
Have been keeping an eye on this thread with interest as I've been having the exact same problem. Bought the car in March 07, had this issue a couple of times in the first month then absolutely nothing until six weeks ago and steady deterioration since. Actually had the computer flash up with 'Selespeed System Failure' for the first time recently, so determined to get this solved somehow! Saying that, I don't drive the car that often so will likely try a new battery first and see if that produces a relatively cheap fix.
Also for people to be aware, this exact question was raised in the Sunday Times 'Car Clinic' a couple of weeks ago, Q&A as follows:
Q I have a 2003 Alfa Romeo 147. Recently the Selespeed automatic gearbox has started acting up. After a reasonably long journey, it will repeatedly place the car in neutral, with no warning. At times, it also seems unable to find third and fourth gear. At low speeds it often changes from second straight to fifth gear. Sometimes I can manually select the gears, sometimes not. What’s going on?

A The Alfa Selespeed auto box has been criticised for being complicated and sometimes difficult. In your case, the problems may be caused by a fault with the gearbox ECU (electronic control unit), which is issuing incorrect instructions.
Because of the extremely complicated nature of the gearbox, the only way to fix this is to take the car to a franchised dealer. Even if a gearbox specialist were able to work on the unit and diagnose a problem, only an Alfa dealer would be able to reset all the electronics.
Ask your local dealer for a diagnostic test, which should highlight the problem areas. If you’re lucky, it might respond to a clearing of the ECU memory and reprogramming, which should be comparatively cheap — possibly €250 (£198) or less. At worst, you might need a replacement gearbox, which could easily cost €5,000 (£3,966).
Just thought everyone struggling with this issue should be aware of an 'expert' answer!
