I have never bought an aftermarket warranty before - on this occassion it came with the car under the Alfa 'Approved Used' scheme. The car was 3 years old when I bought it from Sidlow Alfa near Gatwick. Very quickly found that the air-con didn't work at all despite a re-gas and Sidlow had it back for a few days to replace a broken pipe to cure this.
Meridien have been ok, when the clutch problems first started they replaced the slave cylinder under warranty, but this didn't make a bit of difference. I've been back twice since - the last time they told me that after 3 days of various people driving it, that there was nothing wrong with it. That was back in October, and I decided to give it a few months before taking it back.
The problem has become steadily worse since then, and on taking it back last Monday they phoned me the same day to confirm that they thought something was wrong (at last!!!!). The warranty company engineer however disagreed and said that apart from biting very high the clutch was ok. I couldn't believe this, after 3 months of the pedal feeling different (varying from feather light to rock hard, with an occassional 'click' half-way through it's travel), every time I depress it, he manages to drive it for 20 minutes without it exhibiting these symptoms once!!
The engineer and Meridien advised stripping down the clutch, and subsequently found no problem with the plates etc. Meridien told me that I may as well put a new clutch in it now anyway, and they would bill me for all the work. I told them that if there was nothing wrong with it, I would simply have incurred great expense replacing a part that doesn't need replacing and still have the same problem as before.
Meridien's reluctance to actually try and find out what is wrong with it has irritated me - I feel that half the time they think I'm making the problem up, despite the fact that every time I take the car in it's a 70 mile round trip and time off work etc. I'm not doing it for fun!!! They have always been professional and have kept me informed, but in terms of getting it resolved they haven't delivered.
