Heat Shield On 2002 156 Sport Wagon

i am in the process of getting my cam belt and variator replaced.... and my heat shield is ratling like mad... the mechanic has phoned and said that there is no real need for it on this engine as no other parts are near to it. He is just going to remove it, and leave it like that.

is this correct or should i buy and fit a new one ??

I've seen plenty of engines without it fitted so I guess you could leave it......there isn't anything on the car that should be too close to the manifold. Just watch your hand if you are checking anything down there.....
