Madness 147 Selespeed TOTAL failure

Well its a while since i've been on here and things have not been any better with my dads 147 selespeed.

it has now had a complete electronics failure at 50mph on a busy road.

it all started in december when we bought the car..intermittant abs and vdc failures resulted in the car being returned to the dealer where we bought it only for the car to have a gearbox failure after 2 days...this time the car refused to select gears 90% of the time and if it goes into neutral when stationary you end up unable to select gears and are stranded...not fun in traffic

wanting this fixed before the warranty was up the car was once again returned to the dealer and was from there sent to the local alfa dealer to get its repairs done...after three weeks we were promised it was ready and i went out to collect it as my dad was working.

all was well with the car and i was informed that the onboard computer, the fuse board and several relays had been replaced and that the cruise control had been reset.happy with this i set off from the dealer. two minutes down the road there was a police checkpoint so i pushed the window switch to let it down.

the window went down 2 inches...stopped...and then all hell broke loose on the dash.i drove a mile up the road looking for a suitable turning point to return to the dealer as abs vdc emb warning flashed at me.then while travelling at 50mph on the return to the dealer i had a complete failure of all the electronics in the car.the dash went out.the warnings all went...the radio turned off...the windows wouldn't work and worst of all the selespeed system popped the car into neutral while moving at 50mph.luckily i was just passing a petrol station and managed to coast the car in...the engine having just cut out aswell...and stopped the car on the handbrake as the footbrake had no effect whatsoever.needless to say i was not happy and this was expressed verbally to the dealer who promptly tried to fob me off with some crap about a battery connection!

the car has now been returned to the dealer...the fourth time in 3 months...and we have been informed that all electronics have been replaced and there is nothing else to go wrong...but it is at this stage impossible to trust the car as who knows what could go wrong next.

we have now owned the car for three months...but it has been at the dealers for 9 weeks of that...is the car still trustworthy or a lemon that should be abandoned?

is the dealer just saying this or could the problem actually be fixed.everytime they have had the car it has come back in worse condition than it left us in...and with only 33000 miles on the clock i don't think it should be having this magnitude of problems...

the dealer is hardly trustworthy either as when we finally got a courtesy car from him it broke down the next morning with immobilisor and battery issues!

has anyone else had a similar experiance and can they give any advice at all!?

hi mate
i had the same, first 3 months car was in and out lilke no ones buisness..i had to have a new head gasket ,head skimmed ..all belts .new waterpump.variator.all done under warranty...paid 4k for the car but it cost danperkins about a 1k to repair ...now shes running beutifully..as long as you have the warranty just take it back each time ..if its not a alfa dealer you are going to then demand the car go to a alfa specialist ...also write a letter to headoffice of the dealership you got the car from ...that should help ...i did all this and came out on top..at the endworked out i got a alfa 02 plate 55k .fsh new pirelli tyres ..another 1yr warranty and brandnew MOT all for 3k...

Jonnie, have you had the battery checked on your 147?
ALL of your issues can relate to a failing battery...

Re: 147 Selespeed TOTAL failure

Yeah the battery can cause major hassles and if the alternator is not doing its job then you also have the same issues of the alternator not charging the battery and of course killing the new battery.
