Now that I'm over the disappointment of my first breakdown... well it's not so bad really. The AA man thinks that the spring platform on the offside suspension strut has collapsed, which has locked the wheel in place so looks like a ship taking in water at one corner. Currently it's undriveable and looking forlorn in the Co-op car park.
Something else to add to the list Pud.
On the plus side, when you order check straps and washer nozzles from Alfisti Ricambi you get free Haribos.
As others have said the plate the spring sits on collects water once the drain hole has blocked up, it's under enormous pressure from the spring, when corrosion eats away the plate sufficiently it's goodnight Vienna.
If you're handy with the spanners it's reasonably doable for a home mechanic, should only require a pair of rear shocks for about £150 the pair. The long bolts will be a pig to remove.
Might need a tyre too as the plate will have collapsed onto it.
Oh hell.
I have read this from others aswell.
Defo think i gonna have to get in mine and check it out. If it gone then it is perfect excuse for Coilover upgrade!
Glad everyone is safe and well and the car will be fixable
My rear went .. sounded like a wheel bearing until we smelt burning rubber. Replaced both as the other was not far off either (and you should change both shocks at the same time!)
panelbeater said he would have trouble getting enough masking tape, so he just wrote it off, luckily insurance paid out over the market value :rotate:
