help buying 147.

hi everyone,

i am thinking of buying a 147 1.6 ts turismo 03. and having checked the car over can anyone give me any advice. when i started the car there was smoke coming off the exhaust manifold on the left side of the cover, this stopped after a few minutes, when driving there is a small noise coming from the rear left wheel area that can be on when at about 40 mph, but if u turn wheel to the left quickly it stops. however at 10 mph it does it when u turn left, but it sometimes not doing it at all.
on return there was no smoke but a patch of oil had appeared on top of the engine part to the left of manifold it looks like a starter motor.
having had the use of a 147 jtd in the past which was great fun, the 1.6 didnt seem to come alive at all the the bottom end of the revs until about 4k. but it had good torque at low speeds. the car has full
none dealer service history but no proof of cambelt change, just word mouth 4k miles ago.other wise car in good cond.

would be greatful for your views on these.

Re: help buying 147.

I thought you wanted people to give you money to pay for it when I read the title.

If I was you i'd hold out for a Lusso spec, the toys are worth it, unless you can get proof of the cambelt change i'd walk away unless they knock the cost of having it done off.

Peace of mind is the name of the game here. There are plenty of good cars about but also plenty of dogs that haven;t been looked after.

Good luck in your search.

Re: help buying 147.

yeah, don't rush out and buy the first one that you find just cos its looks gorgeous (they all do). Take the time to find the best you can and travel a bit further for it. Its worth it.

As for service history I actually phoned the dealer that had done most of servicing on mine before I bought it (I was buying from an independent dealer). There were just stamps in the service book with no info on what had been done. They were dead helpful and gave me the run down servicing, repairs, safety recalls and the all important cambelt change.
So you should be able to do the same.

As Ghosty says, hold out for the lusso spec and zero mechanical defects!!

Good luck

Re: help buying 147.

Don't dismiss the Turismo necessarily, unless you're definitely going to use the toys, if it's at the right price. You can pick up 15" Eligance alloys (std Lusso ones) for the price of the tyres of ebay.
