156 won't start (catch)

Hi Chaps,

My bird's got a 156 1.8 twinspark, and every now and again, it won't start. It turns over ok, but just won't start (catch).

To get it to start, you have to keep at it, and eventually it starts to fire (catch), then gradually gets quicker and quicker until it finally coughs into life.

After that it's fine for ages. It doesn't seem to be down to cold weather, or rain.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's petrol. The plugs were changed at the correct service, and aren't due yet.

Re: 156 won't catch.

Is it turning over at normal speed but just not firing?? If yes then either fuel pump, blocked fuel filter or blocked injectors.......run a fuel injector cleaner through the tank, won't do any harm!!!!

Re: 156 won't catch.

It turns over like normal, so I know the battery and starter motor are fine, the engine just doesn't catch or fire up when you expect it to. After a while of cranking, it turns over faster than normal, and faster, like some of the cylinders are firing but not all, then eventually it splutters into life.
After doing this, it may be a couple of months until it does it again.
She's a W reg with about 80K on the clock, and still looks gorgeous.

Re: 156 won't catch.

'catch' is a word often used to describe the starter motor not turning the engine, which is where the confusion came from.

is your key code light remaining lit? if it is then your immob is the problem, wiggle the wires to the left of the fusebox.

if keycode is not remaining lit, have you checked for a spark when this happens? if there is no spark then the crank sensor is most likely.

Re: 156 won't catch.

Sounds like a temp sensor is breaking down, not metering the correct amaont of fuel. Get it to a garage & run a diagnostic test.
