2.4 lumpier than 1.9?

I've just put a deposit on an '02 156 2.4.(50,000 miles) Having driven a Doblo van 1.9 jtd for 3 years I wanted a motor that used the same type of engine as I've been so impressed by it. I have a couple of questions though-
The five cylinder motor shows some vibes when I blip the throttle as it passes through a certain rev range before returning to idle, though it is smooth when driving. My van is very smooth at all times-is this a feature of having 5 cylinders? (I understand it has a balance shaft?)

I would say so DrB, the 5 pot is lumpier but sounds and goes so much better. Personally I think the 5 pot diesel sounds fantastic for a diesel and the torque you get from the 2.4 is fantastic.
Happy driving!

Agree bith Big Red.......my 2.4 is my first diesel and one of the main things putting me off diesels was the tractor-like sounds, esp early morning, but the 2.4 isn't like that at all, don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound like a dodge charge when ticking over, but when your giving it a bit of a rev it sounds pretty nice, and it can definately move!!!

Re: 2.4 lumpier than 1.9?

i've always found the 2.4 to be just as well balanced as the 1.9. if you're noticing some vibration when revving freely it could be due to uneven compression. test all cylinders to see what state the engine is in.
