Cheers everyone I'll check those points
45mpg is my goal as it would then be 10mpg better than the BM and nearly £900 differance in fuel costs per year on the mileage i'm doing annually.
I get 47mpg out of mine quite a lot (some tanks I don't calculate), I have short drive to work with traffic, does not even get fully warmed up, mixed with medium trips and a few long ones per tank. 600 miles from about 60 litre tank. It can be done.
Incidently I will try using cruise control more to try and bump up the figure. What speed does the mpg work best at? Is there such a big jump between say 70-80mph? The other forums say there is, is it true on these jtd engines?
It seems to be geared that 2000rpm (peak torque) is 70mph in 6th, so yes 80 will really affect your economy for sure, maybe 5-7mpg in my experience & best guess. 68-70mph seems to be best combined speed vs economy. Dont forget 10mph is not a great differential, unless you are going hundreds of miles your talking only minutes in journey time.
Cruising above 100 (from experience on autobahn) seriously affects consumption
Cruise - its interesting I seem to find setting cruise helps but I don't know why?
I read on other forums 50mph is the best for a diesel (mpg wise) but I have a life to live and cannot afford to add hours to each of my journeys!
I find difference from 70-60 to not be that great, I am not one for going slow for ecomony, but if traffic absolute rubbish I tend to just cruise in nearside at 60, watching the beemer in the outside lane tailgating and getting no further - 60 definetly better than 70 but not enough to warrent it on a clear road.
If you went as slow as 50, I would expect to see well over 50mpg, more like 55 pushing 60.
Also, kick off the aircon if you don't need it, this can help.
And as you note, don't let it labour, but don't reve to hard either, its definetly a style thing.
And I find that branded not supermarket lasts better, using local esso lately as its 105.9, not tried "super Diesel" like v-power, but definitely does not go as far on Asda tank as it does on branded, I have tested.
