£4k is definately a lot of money for a bottom of the range 02 model. i bet they would take a lot less. classified ads on ebay are the same as ads in autotrader, they start with a very high price so there is plenty of room to haggle. i bet they really only want £3500 for it, which still isnt cheap for that car.
I think you're right, its very expensive for a billy-basic, last of the 140bhp models. If it hasn't had a clutch it will likely need one soon, but changing the flywheel isn't necessary when you change the clutch contrary to what a lot of garages will tell you.
For £4k I'd be looking for a 2.4 150bhp JTD Veloce with 16" or 17" wheels, leather, sideskirts, new style interior and probably 80-90K miles on the clock, with a recent cambelt, tensioners, auxbelt and tensioners (aux belt tensioner alone is £120
), radiator, thermostat, wishbones, pads & discs, exhaust, and if possible (but not likely) I'd try and look for one that has had oil & filter changes in between each service so you know the engine and turbo are in tip-top condition..
Mr Durden - if any JTD you buy hasn't had these things done by 90K or so you are setting yourself up for a lot of big bills. I did exactly the same thing two years ago, I bought one with FSH at 89K miles & 5 years old, cambelt done at 60K including waterpump, and still forked out about £1500 in the space of 18 months on various things failing and needing replacing, and not including pads & discs and exhaust which were new on mine at 89K. They can be expensive cars if you buy them at the wrong time..
