156 2.4JTD Turbo pressure problems

HI, could any one pls assist with some advise. I have a 156 2.4JTD 2002 150bhp model thats done 120,000 miles and its not pulling as well as it should do so its recently been into a garage but the fault hasn't been fully diagnosed yet, Im getting a error message on the system occasionally saying engine system failure so the dealer stuck it onto the computer and its suggesting low turbo pressure and the garage have suggested it maybe be either turbo failure but its doesn't smoke and it still spools up or its the wastage sticking. If either does it mean I require a new turbo if so can anyone suggest how much this may cost and who may be the best supplier of re-con turbos ?

Many thanks

Re: 156 2.4JTD Turbo pressure problems

could be anything.

the turbo on the 140/150 does not have a waste gate, rather variable vaines, moreover, they are generally very reliable.

could be split intake pipe after the maf.

could be faulty maf.

you may also have a small split in a boost pipe as well as another fault?

make sure the garage you took it too have seen a good few faults on jtd's before.

I too would go with a split charge air pipe, the turbos themselves do fail occasionally, but normally when they go you notice it with increased oil consumption. As you say it's not smoking, I would go with a hose problem.

Also check your air filter isn't blocked.

Re: 156 2.4JTD Turbo pressure problems

Split pipe after the MAF but before the turbo.. Thats what I reckon it is. Turbo is pulling air in through the hole after the MAF, the engine is getting all the air it needs but doesn't realise it, hence not injecting enough fuel. Its running lean, and hence not smoking. That is my guess.

See if the EGR pipe has burnt a hole through the U-bend of pipework coming out from the front of your bonnet, I've heard about this happening before..

Best of luck
