Diagnostic codes deciphering?

Hi there,

I have just had a new engine fitted to my 156 (last one was wrecked when the cam belt stripped itself). On collecting the car from the garage it was driving fine for about 4 miles, then the engine warning light came on and driveability became poor - lack of power, almost choking, coughing and spluttering for a while. Thankfully that has now stopped, but lack of power through all revs / gears is still a problem.
I've taken it back to the diagnostic centre who cleared the faults after the engine fit, and the following codes are apparent:

P1178 -Mixture adaption, multiplicative (bank 2, low engine load) not in range
P1177 Mixture adaption, multiplicative (bank 1, high engine load) not in range
P0300 Random/multiple cylinders Misfire detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire detected

As I am not at all Alfa Romeo aware, can anyone tell me what this means? Is this connected to the engine fit?

Thanks for any help / advice!

Re: Diagnostic codes deciphering?

1177 and 1178 are codes for the fuel trims. You've got a fault on both sides of the engine so that would indicate something common.

The first thing I would do is to disconnect the MAF......an ECU reset might be needed to clear the fuel trim data. Leave it idling for a couple of minutes then take it for a drive. If it drives much better than get a new MAF......you could try cleaning it but that may just be a temporary stay of execution.

when i recieved the P1177 and P1178 codes it turned out to be the temp sensor that had failed, that said, 6 months later the MAF sensor failed also!

Worth a try Marko......what temp is the engine sitting at.....maybe they didn't connect the temperature sensor into the thermostat housing.

What engine is it?
