Hi,

First time poster and first time Alfa owner - soon.

I have just purchased (collecting next weekend) a 2006 147 JTDm 16v 3 door at what I think is a very reasonable price considering I'm going to have to put a cam belt kit on it straight away. As far as I know it only has one other issue - the aircon is not working. Of course the seller (private) says it wants a regas but in my experience, its usually more than that.

I've seen quite a few Alfa's advertised as needing a regas - are there any known issues with the aircon on these cars?

Yes, compressor clutches are often the culprit on other cars too. I wasn't aware of the scheduled re-gas though, thanks.

I just thought there may be a particular fault with these - for example, through looking for an Alfa I learned that the r/h control on dual climate control systems often becomes faulty - probably the l/h control on lhd models :)

Check there are no major pipe leaks or even split/cut pipes before re-gassing - despite for the obvious reason, the new stuff will fall out, but the powder in the filter drier (on the side of the condenser) goes rock solid if exposed to normal air for too long (not long, about a day) which completely block the gas circuit. If it's re-gassed and you run the system the pressure build up will blow a pipe with a very loud bang or worse! Yes, been there!!

Your average re-gas/tyre place will have no idea or the skill to check first.

Pipes can be picked up from a breakers and swapped, but a condenser/filter drier unit needs to be new and is about £100 and the time or cost to fit, then the test and re-gas.
