Hmmm 156 Clunking noise - difficult to diagnose

hi, I have a 156 '03, which has developed a clunking noise on the left hand side. It sounds like a traditional antiroll bar linkage issue but is not (changed these to no effect).

The clunk / rattle noise is quite light and only occurs over small sharp bumps, pot holes, no noise over any bigger / more gradual bumps though. It even occurs sometimes on raised road markings. Sounds like a loose bush or maybe in the shock absorber ? It also comes and goes.....depending on how wet / dry it is..... :-/

The local alfa garage had a look today, and could not find anything, have checked drop links, anti roll bar connections, lower / upper arms all seem ok.......to their credit they refused to try to fix until they had a better idea what it could be (some thought of a steering rack prob (worrying!)..).

I know there are lots of posts on the forum on rattles, but wondered if someone knows the symptoms (and the cause too).

Re: 156 Clunking noise - difficult to diagnose

Had a similar noise in my 147 at the front passenger side.

A guy looked at it yesterday for me on a site I was working in and found grit on the brake disc that was stopping the brake pads from making full contact with the disc.

He cleaned it off and I have not heard the noise since BUT it has been raining since so not out of the woods yet.

Top wishbone arm, bit of play in it? Sounds similar to what I have experienced before..

Could also be that the anti roll bar drop link is knocking against the suspension upright - this happens if the anti roll bar bushes are a bit worn and the bar slides over to the left a bit.
