i need to make a decision, current TS owners are the best people to help me decide because you've all bought a TS so you know exactly what i'm talking about, the TS timing belt paranoia issue.
i have always done timing belt jobs myself. that hasnt been a problem in the past because i've owned cars that do not suffer from famous timing belt problems and 35k change intervals. the next owner was always happy to accept a DIY belt change without any receipt (i usually kept old belt and tensioner as proof).
i fear that on a 16v twinspark this may not be the case, and it will affect the value of the car if i do not have a receipt for the timing belt job. i need to try and decide if the extra it costs to get the belt job done at a garage is going to be greater than the amount of value it adds to the car, and also consider the fact that it will be easier to sell.
so here's my 3 choices:
1. DIY; total cost £100
2. local garage; total cost £200
3. specialist; total cost £300
personally i want to DIY, but which option would you recommend and why?
in the past i've done a 2.0TS and i've done the 1747cc fiat block which is even more similar so i'm happy i can do it. the other advantage of DIY is that i know it will get done properly if i do it myself, and nothing will be damaged. i cant really trust a garage to do it properly, and i really hate leaving my car with anyone, but they are insured so i dont know what i'm scared of.
to those who own a twinspark, when you were looking for one would you have been put off if the advert said the timing belt was DIY fitted? would it stop you even considering the car, or would it simply drop the value? if you feel it would drop the value, by how much approx?
lets imagine DIY would put you off, would you be satisfied if it was done at a local garage? would you be willing to pay more if it was an alfa specialist instead?
i really dont want to spend the £300 at a specialist, but if it means i get £300 extra for the car when i sell it then i've saved myself £100 and 6 hours work compared to DIY. it all depends what effect TS paranoia has on buyers.
