hi all i recently changed my oil, spark plugs and filter myself i used castrol gtx 10w 60 oil full systhetic and alfa plugs and filter i had a slight knocking noise on the engine before the oil change but now it is really lound plus the car is really lacking power now any ideas before i take it to the garage ???
hi again sorry it was edge oil not gtx and yes they were ngk sparks from alfaparts.com as well as filter and yes the noise seems to be back LH side of engine also before the oil change the cam belt was squeeling as if it was slipping any ideas ???
Is that LHS of engine as you look at it from standing in front of the car? If it is, hopefully that's just the bearing in the fixed idler on the auxiliaries belt that's squeeling. I'm afraid this doesn't help with the knocking noise or the loss of power though.
yes LH side looking at engine from the front and having listened to it today it is more a tapping sound than knocking and it increases with the revs ??? also it more at the back of engine (towards the winscreen) ???
variator failure is common on the 1.4 1.6 1.8 2.0 TS engines and also the fiat 20v and the later 1.8 and the 2.4 petrol twinnys.
the noise could also be a dry tappet. thicker oil means less oil circulation in the head (its a good way to create fake oil pressure, but not a good way to improve oil circulation). if the noise wasnt as bad when using 10w40 then a tappet seems likely.
