In its latest strop my GT threw off the swirl flap control rod so I'm doing the brass fitting modification but since I'm looking at this now I'm having thoughts of removing them altogether.

It was my understanding that the swirl flaps are in the inlet manifold air intakes, the idea being that at tick over or low revs they add a bit of turbulence to the air helping it mix with the fuel. Looking at some photos of a manifold though it looks as if the flaps are in a separate air intake parallel to a completely open one. Also when the swirl flap is shut it completely blocks off its flow and not partially.

From what I have read on here the hard part of this job is getting the manifold off but I would ask anyone who knows about removing the flaps themselves. Do they pull out of the hole at the top where the rod attaches ?

I actually only have one leaking so I am wondering if its easier to replace one or to replace a seal?

Once the manifold is off you can remove the flaps by undoing the 2 screws that hold them on and then lifting the whole lot out and then you'll need to either blank or weld up the remaining holes.
As the manifold is off you should also get all the gunk either pressue washed or grit blasted out from inside, you would be amazed how much is in there.
But ad Pud says it would be easier to get hold of a clean manifold to swap over, you could then do the whole job in a day.
I have a manifold with no flaps that has been git blasted inside and out that I picked up incase the manifold on my 159 ever started leaking, I have now sold it so was going to put it on ebay.

That sounds like the answer.I'm going to put the rod with brass fittings back on for now. I have tensioner and pump to replace this weekend and rear arb coming back from plastic coaters. Replace manifold is one for the future.

How much for the manifold Jon ?

Thanks for info guys

Its best to change the manifold at the same time as the timing belt and pump as the fuel pump needs to come off.
If you can wait then yes, do it at the same time. However the manifold can be changed without disturbing the timing belt, the fuel pump pulley can be bolted in place prior to removing the centre bolt that holds the fuel pump.

All the best
