Hi, I've got a 2004 156 sportwagon. Can someone give me some advice please.
The aircon and heater seem only to work on or off. The aircon works fine, but when you put it from low to, say 18, it starts to pump out hot air. Is this a problem with the electrics in the control panel? if so is it a simple swap out for a second hand one.
From my experience of 156's there is a control panel issue, they had a dry joint. I had to change mine, every now and then it would just raise the temp in the car. I think I still have my original panel that I repaired(but never tested). You are welcome to it if I can find it.
also keep in mind you're not setting the temp of the air coming out, but the interior temp. The climate control will attempt to get there as efficiently and quickly as possible ....

When you set the temperature to 18°C what were the temperature in the cabin?
If it is lower than 18°C the climate control try try to heat up the cabin temperature until it is 18°C
If the cabin temperature is higher than 18°C the climate control will try to cool down the cabin and you should feel cold air
If not, it could be the cabin temperature sensor that is broken.
If so the climate control may think the temperature in the cabin is very cold and try to heat up.
Furthermore are you sure that the AirCon compressor engage?
If you have the old single zone climate control the AirCon led will be on even if the compressor isn't engaged.
Can you hear the electric clutch engage a few second after you have started the AirCon?
The little grille, on the passenger side I think, under the heater controls, has a small sensor inside, with a fan behind it, which sucks air from the cabin in, passing over the sensor which tells the unit the temperature, this gets dust clogging the sensor, and gives misleading info. Put a vacuum cleaner tightly up to the grill face and, well, vacuum the dust out. Failing that, strip it down and clean the sensor by hand. Make sure the fan is working first, turn on ignition and place ear close to it.
