Running issue

Hi all.

Car is a 2007 147jtdm 16v. When driving I get some hesitation and a "swishing" sound when gently accelerating between about 2k and 2.5k rpm. And some black smoke. If I plant my right foot to the floor the hesitation clears. Done 70k miles with full history. Any ideas where I should be looking? Thanks :-)

Intercooler hoses - Lower one tends to wear first but my upper one went almost immediately after the lower one due to rubbing on the wire reinforced battery cable. Autolusso supply both in silicone.
It could also be the VNT actuator hoses which can perish. Parts cost pennies but fiddly to fit.
Have you done any work to the EGR valve recently?

I did suspect the intercooler hose too. Top hose looks perfect... I have changed the egr for a brand new one which made no difference. Put a blank plate on the egr (with hole) and still no difference.

Its very hard to check the hoses visually as the slightest crack can get much bigger under pressure from the turbo.
If you look on the Autolusso website they used my hose as their example of how bad they can get (yet to receive my royalties).
I would have the VNT hoses replaced first. Its worth getting them done to rule out the cheapest fix first.

Diagnosis... the engine timing is out. Timing belt and water pump were changed 14 months ago and only done 7000 miles. Woodruff key worn too which probably led to it all being out...

Not heard that one before. Poor fitment by garage maybe? Confirm please if new belt fixes your issues. We all like a happy finish.

So, all sorted. New crank pulley, timing belt and timing belt kit. Water pump and coolant. Runs as new with no hesitation and more power too. Still heard the swishing sound a couple of times but no smoke and still smooth....
