147 Tailgate Lock

I've bought a 147 which is being serviced, valeted, etc., ready for me to collect at the weekend.

One of the things my wife noticed was that the badge on the tailgate couldn't be moved to get access to the lock. We checked in the owner's handbook & it does say that there is a key-operated lock, with no indication that it is only present on certain versions, so the seller is going to check it as part of the service.

However...having bought a new badge for my old 145 which I never got round to fitting, I checked on ePER to see if the 147 uses the same part. For the 147 two different 'ornaments' are listed, one of which looks suspiciously like it just mounts directly onto the tailgate panel, with no lock.

So, do some 147s not have the key lock? The badge on mine does feel solid; bearing in mind that the housing & swivel pin are most likely both plastic, I was puzzled as to how it could have seized so tightly.

(The car's a 53-reg 5-door 2.0TS Lusso)

I had a 2004 built 147 pre facelift and that didn't have a key for the boot

The 2 147's I've had (2001 & 2006) are both the same. You open the boot with either the boot release button on the key fob ot the button on the centre console.

Yep, no swivelling anymore Dave - but let's face it, it was a pain in the arse!!

Button on the dash, button on your key.

Re: 147 Tailgate Lock

It's strange that this thread should be mentioned as a couple of days ago I was looking at ePer and I found there to be two sorts of tailgate badges....one with a lock and one without!
There you go, some have some, some don't (probably different markets).

Re: 147 Tailgate Lock

it is probably a legal requirement in some markets, that the boot have the ability to be opened by a key

Re: 147 Tailgate Lock

For most markets, opening with key was replaced with fixed badge in 2003.

Re: 147 Tailgate Lock

Mine, August 2003 build, has no swivel lock on the boot.

Shame, I quite liked it on the 145. Very quirky, very ALFA.

Re: 147 Tailgate Lock

Thanks for all the replies - I've phoned the dealer this morning & told him there isn't a problem; the good news is that, with any luck at all, the car will be ready to collect this afternoon!

I can't say that the lack of a key lock worries me to much, although it would have been nice to have it for the very rare occasion when I need to open the tailgate with a flat or disconnected battery.

I rarely, if ever opened the tailgate on the 145 with the key - as it was necessary to unlock the doors to disable the alarm I found it just as easy to open a door & use the remote release. My wife, on the other hand, used it a lot, which is probably why it was her who found the 'problem'. She'll just have to get used to using the remote unlock function on the key!

This won't be the first car I've had where the manual & what I've actually got differ. I had one, can't remember which, where the layout of the fuse box & the groups of items protected by each fuse were totally different to what the manual showed - made fault diagnosis & actually finding which fuse had blown much more interesting!
