Using a 5 speed 8v on a 1.9 16v

Hi guys can someone advise me. I would like to know if I can use a 5 speed 8v jtd gearbox on my 1.9 jtd 16v. I live in South Africa so I can't find the 6 speed gearbox here any info will be appreciated.

So long as the 5-speed box you're talking about is the one from the 115hp or 120hp version (with the external slave), then yes, it fits. You can also use the 5 speed from the 156 2.4 10v.

There is a lower powered 8v JTD which uses a gearbox more like a Twinspark box, also different driveshafts etc, so avoid this box.

Hi pud thanks for the reply. The funny thing is I bought this box as a 6 speed only to find out its a 5 speed. My only worry is that I don't want to damage the engine with the higher rpm on the motorway. Is there any negatives with using this box with regards to engine damage.

No damage will occur : actually probably less - the 6th gear in the 16V JTD box is a serious overdrive gear and the car borderline strains against it. The 5th gear on the 5 speed box is a better balance between fair RPM's and fair torque to wheels, especially at SA's modest 120km/h limit. Autobahn might over rev - as long as you are not planning on running at Kalahari speed week in October it'll be fine.

EDIT: A friend of mine with a high boost V6 got hold of the 16V gear internals for that fact - at 7000rpm the wheel speed is close to 400km/h

By the way welcome to AO. We have a SA lounge:
