I was completely wrong about the calipers.

How do I tighten up the bolts? What tools do I need?

Hopefully cheaper than a rear end rebuild!

There must be a cheap bodge option involving washers, gaffer tape, cable ties, breakers yards etc. Not heard of a rattle boot before caused by hinge failure. The lock mechanism is usually the weak point.

There are some troublesome spot welds too that can fail, causing creaking from the bootlid.

I can physically move the damn thing from side to side, such absolute great quality and reliability

The only cure to my knowledge is to replace the old ones for a new one.
Going to order from Alfa next week, and get it fitted asap.
