147 Steering Wheel Conversion

I've searched, no joy, here's the situation as it rests:

1. Selespeed wheel in very bad shape, leather and underlay have gone at the rim's top to reveal a 3" strip of shiny plastic.

2. I have a tidy manual steering wheel.

Q: Can I "excavate" the manual wheel to make it accept the Selespeed paddles? Or are the pot metal frames different?

Thanks, Adam.
