I gave you advice of checking earth straps, you checked around that area and found it was your positive lead, I then checked my positive lead and hey presto, it was a bit loose (but not that obvious). Job done.
I stripped down the leads inside the black box that sits on top of the battery, cleaned them up, put some vaseline on the connections and put it all back together and it all works fine now.
This has plagued me for months, eventually leading to poor starting like having a flat battery. I have had the speedo out, pulled plugs out of the ABS control unit and then couldn't get it to start, even considered changing my car and all along it was the connection at the battery.
IF anyone has speedo problems, thoroughly check the earth straps and positive connections from the battery. It sounds simple, now that I know what was wrong.
