GT door mirrors

Hi guys, I've had my GT around 4 yrs and have never really considered why the door mirrors are solid, will not fold in , I'm thinking now about stripping them down and sorting them out and was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and could offer a few pointers or even suggest maybe leave them as I could be opening a can of worms!! Cheers guys Mark

Common issue - the aluminium hinge corrodes/oxidizes and seizes up solid..

Could give it a blast in behind the glass with penetrating oil... But that might not touch it...

Wrap it in a bathroom towel and give it a swift kick... If you break it lose, winner winner... If you break it off, it was too seized up to fix so you were going to have to replace it anyway!

Other thread above. I recently bought a spare that folds off flea-bay. Took the seized one off, removed the cover and motor. Now soaking each day in penetrating oil. So far no go. Will let you know how I get on!

When I got mine - 5 years ago - my driver's door mirror wouldn't fold. I did basically what _The_Editor_ said (although I refrained from fancy footwork). Spraying it with penetrating daily for a week or so - each time trying to fold it. Then eventually plucking up courage/ getting fed up with it; wrapped it in a towel and gave it a mighty heave. In my case it worked, your mileage may vary - and I now make a point of folding the mirrors regularly to keep them supple.

Both the mirrors on my GT never folded. Never fixed them either. The penetrating oil and WD40 never made a jot of difference.

Yes, unless you really need them to fold in order to get into a tight parking spot regularly, the folding is just a gimmick that can be ignored.
