With any car you have to give it a good once over. Any knocks creaks or vibration when driving should prob warrant a second opinion.
If belts have been done check if the variator has been done at the same time. If it needs to be changed you will have to whip the belts off again. You will know if it is on its way out cos it will sound like a diesel on start up.
If in doubt over a cars state you could ask nicely for some one to give it a once over or get the car RAC inspected (for a fee).
About insurance, if you go on your parents policy you will be saving money in the short term.
If you want to build up your no claims bonus go on your own and add one of your parents as a named driver. This is prob best IMO.
