Creaking steering & hollow rattle

Over the last couple of days everytime I turn the steering it's developed a hidious creaking sound, almost like a door from a horror movie.

Also, when driving over bumps or sleeping policemen there's a separate rattle that sounds hollow. I've tried pushing the front wing down to check the dampers. No sound at all. But when I shake it from side-to-side the sound is clearly audible.

Problem is we're going on holiday at the end of next week.

Any ideas what this could be?

Cheers, PP.

Top or bottom wishbones are the most likely cause. If so no harm will come to you on your holiday but it is rather annoying.
Any garage should be able to diagnose with the car jacked up. To fix buy brith parts and expect to pay 100 a side fitted.
Could be drop links as well. These tend to cause knocking more than creaking nut diagnosis and fixing is again relatively easy for a mechanic.

Yup. It's both wishbones and ball joints. Having them replaced on both sides as both sides are knackered. Not sure where you are getting 100 inc fitting from, unless I've misread the post.

My Alfa specialist charges 50-60 per hour + parts.

Had some bad news from the repair shop: When they dismantled the front steering they noticed my front brake pipes were corroded and a bit leaky. So they are doing them. Should pick it up Wednesday morning.

Joys of motoring, eh?
