Changing Coolant

Does anyone have the steps / advise for draining, flushing and refilling coolant on a 2 litre 156?

What is the best coolant / anti freeze?

Re: Changing Coolant

The only way to to take the rad hoses off ... there are no drain taps, etc. As the bottom hose connection to the rad is awkward to get to, I took the thermostat end off and pushed it down as far a it will go. You will never get it all out though. You might be able to rig something to force clean water from a hose into the system and flush it through.

As for type of coolant, you need to make sure it meets or exceeds the spec Alfa state in the handbook. I tend to use the standard Paraflu coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water, but you can also get premixed fluids. But I've also used Halford's own coolant (blue coloured) and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Not sure you can mix blue and pink coolants ....

cheers, Gary

Re: Changing Coolant

the bottom hose on the rad is designed with push clips to allow easy release, in theory, in practice its a right pain in the arse to get the hose off because you cant push both the clips in and also apply a pulling force unless you have a triple jointed wrist. so i did what gazza suggests and disconnected the pipe at the thermostat then levered it down.

then reconnect the pipe and fill with antifreeze/water mixed 50/50. any ethylene glycol antifreeze is suitable.

the twinspark's cooling systme is self bleeding so after refilling go for a drive, then let it cool and then recheck the coolant level and top up as required.
