Couple more questions....leaks and paint.

hi, more random stuff from me and my 156....

ok, i have two slight leaks. when i say slight, i mean i have a foam mat on the floor of my garage, at the front, and on that mat, both leaks leave fluid marks no wider in diameter than that of a coffee mug, with not much build up.

one is engine oil, coming from the gearbox end of the sump by the looks of it, if you look from the front of the car, it is slightly to the right of the front bumper "V". anyone seen/fixed anything similar?

second one, appears to be the selespeed. joy. coming from the passenger side front wing, just infront of the wheels. i spoke to a specialist who told me to keep an eye on it as it could be the pump, but it has remained the same for two weeks. the selespeed fluid level is still showing over max on the filler cap dipstick, and the only thing that has changed is the length of time the pump takes to prime once the driver's door is opened. this is now around 7-8 seconds. pump knackered?

also, paint. ive been trying to get some touchup paint for mine, and went to halfords.

i have Grigio Chiaro Met, code 612/A. funny, because halfords dont have a listing for 612/A. 612 seemed to be just one colour, and didnt look right, so they tried 612/D, which ive found is too dark. has anyone bought a colour match from there before for a silver alfa? where else can i get one?

wouldnt mind using halfords, as their touch up pens for other cars are £5.99, and the mixed one i got was £7.99 for around 3 times as much paint as the pens.

You could be loosing fluid via the breather because you have over filled it.

By "over max" I have presumed you mean it is higher than the "max" mark on the dipstick.

If it is just blowing the excess out of the breather there may not be a problem at all.

Make sure you are checking the level with the ignition on.
Check it just after the pump stops.

It will be at its lowest point then.

Re: Couple more questions....leaks and paint.

buy paint form your local alfa dealer, its £3.88 and a perfect colour match.
never go to halfords for anything, please i beg you.

if the selespeed fluid level is over max then yes it will force the excess out the breather.

one thing you need to be aware of, the leak residue on your garage floor will be a very small amount of the total fluid loss, when you are driving the pressure built up in the crankcase will force oil out any leak in the sump gasket, the residue on your floor is only the drips that occur when you have the engine running on the garage and the drips that occur after you switch the engine off. a residue patch the size of a coffe mug is very significant and needs immediate investigation, as well as daily engine oil checks.

Re touch-up paint.
I got some 612/A from an Alfa Main Dealer soon after getting the car many years ago.

Halfords range never seams to have what I need.
Their blue for my Cinq was wrong too!

There won't be high pressure in the crankcase, that is what the crankcase breather is for.

Obviously if the crankcase breather is blocked it will blow various oil seals.

cheers jug, will have to find one near me then.

re the oil leak, the actual level doesnt appear to have shifted in over a week now. i did notice a good drop a while back and rang the specialist that fitted it, was advised some burn a bit whilst bedding in. topped up with a litre, hasnt moved at all since.
