Alfa 156 1998

Alfa 156 cuts out.

I've got a 1998 156 2.0 TSpark.

Recently it started cutting out on me.

The 1st time i was stuck in traffic and stated again after 20 mins or so. Then drove fine for 2 weeks - no problems.

Next time it cut out I did maybe 15 miles on the motorway came off at a junction and cut out as I waited at the traffic lights. Again started after 20 mins or so.

Got it going again was nearly home but could feel the engine dropping power a bit, then stopped at more flipping traffic lights and cut out again. Again it started after 20 mins or so. Obviously more concerned this time since seems to be cutting out more regularly.

The engine doesnt appear to be over-heating and was driving fine between cutting out.

Anybody any ideas what might be wrong?

If I can't get it fixed relatively cheaply it's getting binned.

Cheers,

David.

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

Need a new TDC (IIRC) Sensor

About £25 for the part and most swap it themselves.

PS Welcome

Yep sounds like rpm (aka crank) sensor. They start to fail at temperature.......once the engine cools down then the car will restart etc.

My 147 had the same symptoms, took it to Alitalia Nr Wrexham and they sorted for me..common problem but very irritaing, especially when you break down in rush hour traffic !!

What they all said!!

Seems to be a common fault on all the engines

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

I was wondering, for the sake of £20 odd and 1 hours work would it be worth getting this changed as a matter of course? It seems that after around 60k miles they are on borrowed time.

Changing it would be better than breaking down.

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

It would be a good idea to change it after say 60K miles.

It can be dangerous when it goes as you could be anywhere - and stranded. Mine went on a motorway and after 10 mins the police came over and said politely that I needed to get the car moved within an hour otherwise they would have to arrange a recovery truck (with the associated steep costs). All I could do was limp along every 20 mins or so until I got to a garage.

So yes it would be better changing it than having to through all that again.

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

I will change mine then, I have done one before so hopefully I can do the job in less than an hour this time... I can also give the throttle body a good clean whilst it is off.

Hi, I too live in chester, it is about a 35 minute drive along the A483 (come off at the Coedpoeth turn off and follow the signs for Brymbo/Fron) please see below for directions on their website...it is a bit out of the way but they seem to be enthusiasts of Italian motors and know their stuff...

Good Luck

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

I`ve just started having this problem i think.
My 147 does not spark into life , but the startter motor is turning over. seams to be happening when the car hot and cold. then if i give it a while and try angain it `s fine. also some times does not instantly start as per normal but is a little sluggish to start. ..

any idea where i`ts located as i may look at changing my self.

Re: Alfa 156 cuts out.

Its on the engine at the gearbox end, just beneath the starter motor at the back. The connector is brown and is clipped on the inlet manifold, you might find it easier to follow the wire down to the sensor.
