Hmmm blown head gasket on 156

Hi guys , can anyone tell me where i can find the instructions for changing the head gasket on a 156,1.8ts 1998 , as i have an owners manual cd but its so damn hard to navigate around , although i am mechanically minded i have not changed a head gasket before and cannot afford the £900 bill to have it done for me. many thnx to all for your assistance

The way around the cd is......
Select engine model...
---repair procedures
---doubleclick on engine unit
---doubleclick cylinderheads
---doubleclick cylinderhead remove + refit
---doubleclick only option
---follow the instructions. Each operation may be specified , See op. xxxx. Doubleclick on the line and follow those instructions and when your done click the backbutton ( back arrow )

For reassembly click the yellow box with arrow on the right....
Hope this helps as giving you direct instructions is quite a long story.

BTW you need cam locking tools. I bought mine from alfaworkshop.co.uk-40£ and a few other bits you may be able to make yourself. Ex. TDC gauge- it´s a dialgauge which shows you when a piston is at Top Dead Center. I made one from a tube with sparkplug thread and a stick inside and a dialgauge to measure.

do it yourself and it will cost around 200 with new cambelt and water

1 disconnect exhaust front pipe from manifold
2 remove 2 bolts on drivers side of engine going through the coolant manifold
3 remove the 2 13mm bolts from the thermostat
4 remove pas resevoir bolts, 2x 5mm allen bolts then remove the 13mm bolt from the bracket under the resevoir and slacken the big 17mm gold bolt beside it
5 disconnect all wiring
6 obviously remove the belts once timing is set up
7 remove dipstick tube
8 on some models remove 2 15mm bolts from a bracket underneath the inlet manifold ( not all have this)
9 head should come off now

if you havent done a HG before i'd at least consult the 156 cd-rom manual. if you havent got a copy that you can use you really should get one (tried the newer style cd rom?). HG replacement is easy enough, but the twinspark is hardly a beginners engine.

I know this is an old thread but it has helped me with getting the head off... well nearly :S

Point 8, the 2 15mm bolts under the inlet manifold.... How on earth do you get to them???

I would get the head skimmed before you refit - usually about £ 35.00 and dont forget to torque it up correctly some people advise removing the head complete with inlet manifold othe folk suggest seperating the manifold from the head - prefer the second method but the choice is yours - BTW their are a couple of really difficult to access bolts - if you are going to use the first method then there are two 13 mm bolts that you will need to access from underneath the car

do you mean the ones that bolt the inlet onto the head, its with lots of arm scratching, this is why i'd take the inlet off with the head.

You can avoid some scratches on your arm if you remove the air intake pipe including the MAF .

Made it a bit easier when I did a head gasket on a 2.0 156

the inlet has been left on but there are 2 nuts right in the middle of it underneath that are blocked by a cross bar running underneath. The air intake and all that has been moved right out of the way, this is about point 8 mentioned above where some models have these 2 extra bolts holding it down.

Might just have to grit teeth and try separate the inlet from the head. (the 2 bolts preventing us moving the head are attached to the inlet and seemingly inaccessible)

You could try removing the engine lol , that should give you enough space to access everything ... just joking

I removed the inlet manifold off the head when I did the head gasket but still battled to get two nuts off the back on the belt-side of the engine, then still had problems keeping the inlet manifold off the studs of the head when I wanted to lift the head off the block.

You decide what sound easiest
