Help re cylinder head

Following a cambelt failure I have purchased a reconditioned head and I am gradully transferring the parts over.

One part I cannot work out is on the base of the head there are two guides which locate it in the block. These have been removed from the recon head but I cannot extract them from the old head to swap them over they appear to be fixed in with a sealant

Any ideas on removal and what sealant it might be?

Re: Help re cylinder head

No idea what is sticking them in, but for 25p it is hardly worth the stress of trying to remove the old ones.

Re: Help re cylinder head

Sorry misunderstanding I am going buy new ones but just wondered if they should be stuck in with something on reassembly. If not and they are a tight fit any guidance as yo how they should be inserted so as not to damage them

Re: Help re cylinder head

This probably isn't relevant now as you are buying new studs, but one way to get hard metals like steel out of soft ones is to wait until the wife goes out and put them in the oven. The theory is that the soft metal expands more than the hard metal. I went for about 150C to get my clutch slave cylinder out. There is a danger that your valve seats etc. may come loose as well on a head though.

To drift new ones in I use a socket that is slightly wider than the stud and put a nut in the end to make it shallower. It will help you to hold the stud straight when hammering rather than smashing up your thumbs & fingers.
The extension bar allows you to see the angle that the stud is making with the surface of the head, ensuring it goes in straight.
Using a bigger hammer (even soft taps with a sledge hammer) in a controlled way for this type of thing is better than going mental with a hammer that is too light.
A bit of grease helps. HTH

Re: Help re cylinder head

Can be difficult to remove, all of the above advice is fine. My distant memory pictures these locators as having a chamfered leading edge, so make sure they are as boger says, dead square to the face.
