Moaning SeleSpeed Fault

Hi Guys,

Posting on behalf of my mate who doesn't have a computer just a broken alfa

As he was going around a corner the gearbox seems to stop dead, just went into neutral and wouldn't select gears!!

There was no flashing of oil levels etc, however when he turns the engine on now the oil level light flashes a few times!! this never happened before!!

Does the gearbox stop working if the fluid is low?? he is going to top it up today, anyone know the procedure??

its a 2ltr 99 tspark model

Thanks
Rob

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

Hey Im the guy with the problem (cheers rob)

I noticed that before i took the journey when ti stopped, the oil light on the dash flashed, i never got round to topping it up before i left i was going to do it in the morning.

About 2 mins away from my house it just stopped. It wouldnt start either, but the starter was broken.

I can now start it but it wont select gears, Ive been told a millian and one different things, i was first told my gearbox had gone bang, butnw being told it could be something as simple as fluid level in my oil pump, or he actuator or ECU.. I had no problems before, it just happened..

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

Does the Selespeed pump run when you open the door to get in?
Have you checked the fluid level?

Yes the system will stop working if there isn't enough fluid in there, you can't get much hydraulic pressure if there is no hydraulic fluid in there!
There is only 0.6L in the entire system, so a small loss can become a big problem.

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

If you can't hear the pump run try this. Inside the wing is the selespeed pump with 2 wires on it. Disconnect them and stick a 12v supply directly on it. If it struggles to run it is knackered.....

What the guy at Rob's clutch place said t'other day

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

Healthy run or is it laboured if you know what I mean as the bushes are prone to failure...

Checked all relays etc?

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

It sounds healthy.. It whines for about 7 seconds then goes off (whines as in the way pumps do when they start up) I just read the manual and the light which flashed is the selespeed light. If i can get upto the car im gonna try topping the oil up first, but where can i get TUTELA CS SPEED oil from???

Any Alfa or Fiat parts dept.
In an emergency, a top spec D3 ATF fluid will be ok.

Ferrari, Maserati, Aston, BMW, etc, etc.. must also use something similar in their paddle-shift manual gearbox systems (not to be confused with some of their paddle-shift automatic gearboxes).

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

Any good gearbox place. MUST make sure that you use the selespeed oil otherwise you will have problems.

Pump sounds fine.....

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

If there wasn't enough hydraulic fluid in the system, when you open the door would the pump just continue to run as it couldn't build up the required pressure?

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

There is a max time that the pump will run for, it won't just keep running.

Re: SeleSpeed Fault

Bleeding the system would be the next step.
