Re: Code Readers

hi pat - my interface is a serial one i'm afraid so you'll need an RS232 port to use it.....

Re: Code Readers

ummm - not sure, you'd probably be best just getting a USB one from ecufix as i think the USB to serial adapters can cause problems.....

Re: Code Readers

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Pat but I'm after some clarification!
I have a laptop winging its way as we speak. So what elsedo I need?? I have e-mailed the guys at Alfadiag with no response and also Ecufix.
I understand my 156 is a 'non-compliant' (with OSB-11) so what do I need? What software? How much does it cost and where do I get it? What leads/interface do I need? Where/cost? Can I get a diagram to make my own leads? I have plenty of RS232 connectors but what do I plug into the car??
So many questions...............

Re: Code Readers

Oh Dear a bit new for me to be qualified to give you this info as I was struggling to begin with this myself but here goes; Alfadiag is the software , it costs about £40 if you go to site and look under FAQ i THINK you will see the engine code that is compatible with your one,ie mine is AR 3201 FOR 2.0 etc., and go to ecufix and obtain a USB ISO OBD-II / VAGCOM / AlfaDiag KKL Interface,BETTER THAN RS232 i BELIEVE,i HAVE JUST PURCHASED BOTH THE SAME BITS SO HERE GOES.

Just buy it, it's only £40. So the first time you use it to reset your airbag light (which the software will do provided you modify your interface lead) it has paid for itself.

Re: Code Readers

Alfapat
I've been looking at a similar issue on my spider and have come across this site here
that lists the various protocols and the pin outs of the plugs. The fact you got the 7 pin populated proberbly means you have the quote :-
"ISO and KWP Protocol Pins
If pins 5, 7, 16 and, optionally, 15 are populated, the vehicle supports ISO or KWP."

I bought the USB ISO OBD-II / VAGCOM / AlfaDiag KKL Interface from ecufix.com and loaded up the freeware virtual serial com port software and got the laptop to recognise the cable and load the drivers.
I also loaded the Alfadiag software but this is only for cars before 2001 so I've started looking at other options like the interfaces based around the ELM327 chip as this supports all the protocols.

I used this site here and theres a tool chooser page and if you need more info on the type to use you can submit a query and they get back to you via e-mail.

Hope this adds some light and dosen't clouds the issue.
I've got a thread running on the Alfa Brera, GTV & Spider pages if you want too look .

Re: Code Readers

Hooorah and Booo-hooo!
I have the AlfaDiag all up and running and I have cleared all the faults which has fixed the wobbly tickover but it is telling me that I have a Air Fuel Meter fault. It is 'below minimum' whatever that means!!
Can these things be fixed or do I need a new one??

Re: Code Readers

You can make sure the connections are clean & tight.
You can sometimes get an improvement by cleaning the sensor with a residue free electronic solvent. But you may need a new sensor.

What symptoms do you have now?

Re: Code Readers

The car now idles as smooth as a smooth thing but as soon as you try to drive off it kangaroos. The engine revs up and down which causes the selespeed to go nutty.
I'll try to give it a clean.

Re: Code Readers

Is it the same after you have driven off, i.e. after the clutch is fully closed?

Re: Code Readers

I'll try to clarify......

A 164 will probably need Examiner so I'd suggest you are not going to find anything else.

Pre 2001 156s - use Alfadiag

2001 and onwards - use one of the OBD2 software variants - ELM323 is one type that will work.

Re: Code Readers

David, the car is OK when up and moving. The problem is at low speed when the engine revs rise the Selespeed gets excited and then they drop so the Selespeed dips the clutch etc...

Re: Code Readers

If you are trying to hook it up to a laptop not all laptops (especially the smaller ones) have the RS232 port. My work laptop is quite small (Toshiba Portege) and that has no RS232 port.
Most desktops however will have the RS232 port but of course lugging your desktop close to the car could be a pain.
Maybe you have a frind with a larger laptop and hopefully the RS232 port?
