Steamy Exhausts
Morning all.
Just wondering if Alfas have steamier exhausts than alot of other cars?
I know the mornings are getting very cold now, and a steamy exhaust is quite normal! But even with the car up to temp and a good hours driving my exhaust it's still VERY steamy. Kinda worries me a little as no one elses is.
Only had the 1.6 147 for a half a week, so I'm just checking if everything's OK.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Steamy Exhausts
Yes they are, mine is always very steamy, like you say even when it's warm.
I recall theat someone on here said that the TS engine runs very hot, that's why they use a bit of oil too, so maybe this heat accounts for the extra steam?

Re: Steamy Exhausts
Mines pretty steamy but once it's up to temp it seems fine. Can't think what might cause it staying steamy unless you have a lot of moisture getting into the system somewhere. You don't live in a marsh do you?

Re: Steamy Exhausts
Ahh hey, that makes sense. Thanks!
(loving the 147 so far! The climate still confuses me slightly, as does the asr button. But wow, feels great to drive)
edit - Nope, dude. Live in the burbs! I thought it may have something to do with it being on the forcourt for a while... Dunno why I thought that though.

Er, the climate control makes no sense to me either.
ASR, that's just a form of traction control isn't it, it's permenantly on but if you press that little button by the handbrake it goes off, allowing to do wheelspins if you are that way inclined.
ASR is a bit like Anti-lock brakes 'in reverse', ie when the car senses the wheels slipping on the road or loose ground under accelaratin then it cuts the power away from that wheel for a milli-second.

Re: Steamy Exhausts
Yup, I was going to post to ask about the amount
of steam compared to other cars.
Mine looked like a bleedin' diesel the other morning!
Very embarrassing!

Re: Steamy Exhausts
In this cold damp weather I seem to blow out clouds of steam. (the car of course) Seems more than other road users are pushing out. I assume its because I'm burning more petrol.

Followed a Zafira last night that must have had a steam-engine under the bonnet judging by the exhaust emissions .... so it's not just us guys!

Re: Steamy Exhausts
In a queue of traffic last night, and it looked like I was trying to create some kind of smoke screen behind the car!!!
The 156 was certainly significantly more steamy than any of the other cars in the queue.

Re: Steamy Exhausts
..the water vapour in the exhaust chills as it hits the cold atmosphere - simply takes longer to evaporate again in this kind of weather (cold and moisture laden air)
...when you start a car in the morning the rear of the exhaust system is not up to temperature so the water vapour is visible for some time..

Re: Steamy Exhausts
Ive notcied that my GT seems to try and create its own localised fog patch in this cold weather! Starts happening just after I stop in a queue. Looks quite cool when I accelerate off tho
My v6 Cougar produced a lot of steam in the cold. Maybe its just down to the design of the exhaust system.

Re: Steamy Exhausts
On the last day mine ever drove, I could tell something was wrong because it was about May, and whenever I pulled up at lights, I could see a massive cloud. Rather optimistically I hoped this may just be steam. Car never made it to its destination (mot centre abuot 2 miles away), had a crack in a cylinder so it was filling with water and pumping it out of the exhaust! Looked like someone had attached a hose inside the exhaust when I had the car towed home and tried starting it again, water was literally just pouring out of it!

Re: Steamy Exhausts
my 147 does it too, more so than other cars in the queue of traffic, and yes, even when its warm so I've concluded from the above it must be normal :-)
