Well, I know where your coming from and remember I already have this engine in the GT (and it's a corker).

But what I'm looking for is a compromise between price and adequate performance. It was no contest with the GT because it was actually £500 quid cheaper than the 2.0JTS. It's not the same when considering the 147.

OK, I see where your coming from!

Why do you not go for the 2.0 as there are plenty around all substantially cheaper than the 1.9JTDm and only an incy wincy bit more than the 1.6?

Jeees, just when I thought I'd cracked it you mention reliability.

Are you talking about Mafs, timing belt and variators? If so aren't these the issues which kick in at 35k +? It's very unlikely we would keep it beyond 3 years/24,000 miles.

What else goes wrong with it?

I dunno, really.

I'm kinda black or white in decision making so the 2.0 just fudges things up for me I suppose.

Wonder where the girls are in all this. I'm sure Paintergirl recently took delivery of a new 147. I wonder if it was a 1.6.................?

If you're buying new, for three years it won't make a shred of difference which you go for to be honest!

When we were looking, it wasn't for brand new ones and it was to replace a much loved but fairly tired 7 year old 145QV which was coming up for belts and plugs and I just couldn't face all that hassle again for a second car and to be honest Mrs Rick doesn't get much pleasure from driving and the power delivery of the JTD suited her driving style much better than something that needed revving. You know the sort of thing... 4th gear by 30mph, no more than 2000 rpm...

Re: 1.6Ti or 1.9 Mjet, I just don't know?

Why not a 1.6 TI? It has all the bells and whistles- leather seats, multispokes, roof spoiler but is still the nice sweet petrol engine. There are quite few low mileage ones in the used alfa section of the Alfauk site. I'm obviously not suggesting she would be seduced by a colourful interior and snazzy wheels.....

I'm taking her off to Ayr tomorrow to test drive the 1.6s. The only thing I don't like about the ti are the spoked wheels, I simply love those tear drop horseshoe affairs. The only thing I think I need to sort out in my head is whether the initial £1500 quid saving over the diesel will be whittled away to nothing in depreciation after three years. The diesel will clearly be the more desirable vehicle as a second hand purchase.

Decisions, decions

Re: 1.6Ti or 1.9 Mjet, I just don't know?

Well that was what I would have proposed, let her test-drive both cars and see which-one she likes more

For overall use, I prefer the JTD, though a lot of the low-rpm torque is spoiled by the ASR/VDC. For fun though, the 1.6 feels much more alive once you get it going ar 3k+ rpm. When driving petrol engines in general I have a very hard time not to floor it every time I get in, while a JTD allows me to drive more relaxed (well - from time to time that is )...

Re: 1.6Ti or 1.9 Mjet, I just don't know?

I would seriously get her to check the grande punto sporting, you can pack it full of kit and it looks as good as a 147 for about £3k less, its quicker, probably smoother on the road too, though it does seem a bit cheaper inside but when it is a cheaper car thats not so much of an issue.

That's what I was getting at. You can get a Grande Punto 1.9 MultiJet 130 Sporting in Exotica Red with Black Leather and 17" Alloy Wheels for £ 12,295.

Sandy, she won't hear of a Grand Punto and that's that I'm afraid. She said she'd rather have another Clio than the Punto and we can't have that can we?

I'm swinging back towards the diesel again as I'm hearing the 1.6 has very poor residuals. If that's the case then the costings swing in favour of the diesel with the bonus of improved fuel consumption and superior performance.

I know what's bothering me though (if I can admit it) it's the dark-side versus petrol, I just know it is. For me the thought of jumping into a wee free-revving twin spark has more allure than having another "goertcha" scruff of the neck torquey diesel.

But it's not for me, is it

Aw 'feck, I'll just have to get the GTV out more often?

Go for the TS then you can get closer to completing your collection of Alfa engines.

The dark side is beckoning. Embrace the torque....
