Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Hi there,

After buying a new 147 Turismo from owning a lusso, i was a bit disheartened that it didn't have any cruise control. After a bit of deliberation and not finding much on here, thought i'd check it out.

Basically all you need to do is find the stalk and lower steering wheel cowl cover, screw the stalk on with two screws, connect the connector and refit the lower cover.

Then you have cruise control.

Hope this helps anyone.

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Really? due to usual wierd Alfa specs our 2 litre lusso doesnt have it, but I thought the stalks came 'in one' i.e all 3 together.

I was going to buy a set and try, but didnt have the bottle!

So its plug and play then?

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Indeed it does. Basically all you need is the stalk, and two screws. a screw on the front, and one in the back of it. (you'll see where when you get the new stalk). Oh and the lower cover for the steering wheel.

I'd check that the wiring is there first as a precaution, but appears to be the case!

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Thank you Musso, our car is a 2 litre Lusso so I'd like to think its there! do you have any pictures of what connections I should be looking for?

I looked at Eper and the stalks come as a pack, i.e not individually - so I guess yours is from a salvage yard.

Our car has auto wipers, so from the dealers, a complete stalk pack is the most expensive version.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Is this for real ? I've just purchsed an ex Alfa 147JTD M-jet Lusso from Sept '05 which dealer assures me is one of a few 'early facelift' cars that didn't have it fitted for some reason.

If so I'll be heading back in their direction for it retro-fitting (although they didn't offer this as an option).

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Unfortunately i didn't take any pictures.

I took it off my old 147 to try it on my new one to make sure it'd work before i sold my old one.

it was the only connector that was in the area, a flat connector about 3/4 of an inch long, 1/4 wide.

Get a stalk of a scrap car, but make sure you ask for the screws that secured it in too, as well as the lower steering cover. The screw that screws in the front of the stalk is at least twice as long as the standard one (no cruise control). Just clicks in to place and fastens front and back (although the rear is particularly difficult to get too)!

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Thanks Muso - I have feelers out to get the stalk with scrapyards.

Did you need to remove the steering wheel?

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Ive found a set of stalks on ebay.

Would just need to get the lower column shroud, will check Eper for that, cant be too expensive.

I dont know mate, I dont know.

I take it yours aint a Lusso then!

Its riskier on a 156 as not many had it, whereas about half the 147's have cruise fitted.

If it doesnt work the stuff all goes back on ebay anyway.

The parts I am using are all new and came to £78.00

Dealer price would have been £182.00

Seeing as we extracted £300 form the dealer for delivering the car without cruise, its a bargain if it works.

I doubt it will ever get used , but no arguments at resale time as to the spec.

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Finished, done, works - thanks Muso.

I gave up on that rear screw though - it seems solid enough without it.

I'll try again at the weekend when my steering column shroud turns up.

Thanks again Muso 147 for the tip.

BTW for others - no need to remove the steering wheel and the plug is a white rectangular job in the loom on the opposite side to the ignition, the only spare one in the vicinity.

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Awesome! Good effort!

I'd have a go at the rear screw. Just get hold of a stubby posi screwdriver and get your head under the wheel and you'll get it in there! little bit awkard i must admit!

Was it an ebay shop or a private seller?

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

I've seen plenty of adverts for 147's being broken at scrap yards. I'll bet if your try part finder of something similar you'll find them.

Re: Retrofit Cruise control - the definative guide

Well I can confirm it does work on facelift 156 also. I recently fitted it to mine. For 156 you can buy the stalk seperate it costs £45 for the stalk and £10 for the cowel unless you get one at a scrappy. Its £55 but still cheap for proper cruise.

Anyone know about the pre-facelift 156? I've been quoted £400 for aftermarket cruise control to be fitted

It does not have the facility of just adding a stalk, no.
