Price of 147 Manifold Heat Shield???

Hi

Does anybody know if you actually need the heat shield on and if so how much does a new one cost because mine seems to be cracking all over and sounds like someone shaking a jam jar full of paperclips in my engine bay when I give it some right foot.

Cheers

Re: Price of 147 Manifold Heat Shield???

I think its a common problem with 147, my first 147 did this. According to an alfa specialist it's caused by the dreadded speed bumps

Alfa dealer think was about £25 + vat.

The manifold cover wraps wright round the manifold, I would definately replace it - not just remove it. Manifolds are expensive to replace

Cheers for that, was kinda worried it might cost a fortune, just had it down to my local alfa specialist and he thinks its the bracket that holds it on at the bottom that's gone, either way it's a cheap enough fix, unlike the £500 I'm going to have have to spend on getting the syncro's replaced in my gearbox.

Yeah I was suprised at the price to, usually:

Alfa Romeo Part = £££

When they said "£25 quid mate", I nearly said "Are you sure?" - lol

Re: Price of 147 Manifold Heat Shield???

Really useful info on this thread, cheers guys.

I've been having this same problem for bloody ages on my 147, and the dealer never really picked up on it. I was finding it hard to describe the noise, but I reckon a 'jam jar full of paper clips' sums it up perfectly.

Anyway, mine went in to the main dealer today to get it sorted (along with my airbag warning light which was quoted at £132 to be fixed), and they quoted me £145 quid to replace the heat shield and bracket. Bit concerned about that given that the parts apparently only cost about 25 quid. Anyway, I didn't have any of the work done in the end, can't exactly afford £275 at the mo.

The 147's out of warranty as of this Friday (aargh!). Probly been asked a million times already, but does anyone know any Alfa specialists in Manchester so I can the heat shield sorted??

Yes, the total price should only be around 25-30 quid. Mine went, had it replaced and it's going again - it's a known weak point. At least it's an easy fix! Buy the bit and do it yourself - it's only 3 or four studs, if I remember rightly.

Re: Price of 147 Manifold Heat Shield???

Bit more info on this, my specialist found that a bracket down the bottom of the heat shield near the lambda sensors had rusted and broken at some point. This left the two sheared adges clattering together whilst in motion.

Oddly the replacement part was designed completely differently with stress points in different locations so it could be a common fault, replacement cost £15ish as I remember.

The bracket is a crap design and will eventually break again. I had mine double welded with a stiffener plate last time it went (again).... its been good so far.

Regarding the heat shield, its a **** easy job to replace it yourself.
