more 147 selespeed issues

Hi everyone, am experiencing more issues with the selespeed in my 2004 147 2.0 twinspark
While driving the gear selector light flashes and wqill only let me change from 4th to 2nd and back. i have to push gear stick twice to change. Have experienced the car changing to neutral while traveling as well. Stopping ,turning off the engine and leaving for 30 seconds or so usually fixes the problem. what are the possible causes before forking out $$$$ to a dealer to 'try and fix'.
Any help greatly appreciated.

have been looking in the forums and am thinking it could be a possible sensor fault. Would an ecu reset help or could it create more problems?
