Yet another JTDm 16V cam belt failure...
...Sods Law, it happened the week before I was going to book it in for a change :-(
Doing 55 down a dual carriageway (just come out of a 50 zone with Gatsos), lost all power, servos, steering etc.
It's now at my tame mechanics in Cheshunt and has been dismantled, but they've been quoted over £1100 from Alfa for parts - sounds like a right rip-off to me!
My mechanic's suggested that I get online and source the (OEM) parts myself for cheaper... so, any recommendations on suppliers? It looks like I need the usual:
- Cam belt kit
- Water pump
- Rockers x 16
- Cam carrier gasket
Alfa have also said that I need to replace the lifters, too - and that's where the bulk of the cost appears to be :-(

Bad news.
Was it the usual water pump failure? What mileage did it fail at?

lifters depend up on if your car has newer ones i believe ..400(no lifters) should see parts taken care of

Thats a bugger mate , i bought my gt ,the seller told me that the belt had being done but said that he thought the water pump had being done. i took no chances with mine so when i took the covers off found the pump had failed and had caused the belt to start to run off the outer edge !!luckly for me the belt never came off, as i am a auto engineer i was able to do the job at cost ,but it could of being alot worse. hope you get your car back on the road soon .

I had the same thing replaced 3 years back on my jtdm for £550
Found that you coud get followers compete or just the rockers, massive price difference. (excuse me if I got terms wrong) but it was the equivalent of 1/3 rd the price per valve.
Shop around for a good indie : e.g. Auto lusso etc...

Thanks to Ned and James at Autolusso, there's a kit of parts en route to my mechanic (for a very reasonable price) :-)
I found out a couple of months ago (at around 68K) that the belt *hadn't* been changed at the 72K service (carried out at 54K)... I was somewhat slack in booking the ol' girl in for the work and so, at 73,386 miles she gave up.
If there's one thing I've learned, it's never take a service book at face value... And avoid costly work by getting stuff done sooner. OK, if there's *two* things I've learned...
...nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition ;-)

That's the norm for jtds. This is a bit more than a change.

Yup, it was the water pump that went, taking everything else with it.

ALFA CAMBELT OFFERS
Why do they charge more for the 2.4 than the 1.9? The job is exactly the same.

they think that becouse you u are driving car with a bigger engine, you automaticly have more money than other with smaaler engines the same thing - the part from 3rd series bmw costs 50 but the same part 100% the same but now its for 5th series and it costs 75
