Alfa 156 airbag light-seat moved-guaranteed reset??!!

Hey guys,

I know there are many posts about this but they all seem contradictory and the actual solution is not clear.

I have recently moved my passenger seat and the airbag light came on. I know this is a common fault and needs resetting.

I've read that an ECU reset by disconnecting the battery may work but I think the software reset is most likely (I will attempt battery reset tomorrow).

I have bought the cable for the OBD port with Alfa protocal. I have to yet to buy the AlfaDiag software because I've read that it isnt guaranteed to reset the light.

What have people done to reset their light? It was definitely caused by the seat being moved and I have checked the fault codes by other means and have no fault codes. I don't fancy taking it to an Alfa dealer if I can do it myself in case it happens again...

Many thanks guys as always!

Secure the underseat connector with a tiewrap !
btw I hope your OBD connector is wired for airbag control ! the standard cables
for the general public are not allowed to have airbag control ( for obvious reasons)

There are a number of air bags and any one of them can throw an error (although the passenger seat is usually a prime suspect) so you do need to hook it up to find out which one is at fault. As rearbear points out because airbags contain explosives most "cheap" cables will not talk to the airbag ECU - you can modify the cable to do this - there are lots of threads that give instructions how to.

If you have a facelift interor you may find that the light goes out on it's own when the error clears (although it will still be recorded on the ECU) or else you will need to hook it up and clear the error.

The most vicious airbag error is a broken sensor pad in the passenger seat
(don't ask how I know).

The airbag light on one of my 156's comes on regularly especially when the passenger seat is moved. I can reset it with fiatecuscan but sometimes it will be without having to disconnect the battery and sometimes i need to disconnect the battery, check the connector and then reset it.

don"t go out from the worst scenario ! first try to reset the light, if that fails reseat the connector under the passenger seat (usually the culprit)
If that does not get result, put a 4K Ohm resistor on the connector and try a reset again.
if the LED stays out , you have the culprit i.e. the sensor pad, a horrible job to replace !

I think it is the connector. if i poke around, fiddling the cables it goes out until the next time i start up.

you can decide to cut the flimsy connector and solder the wires ! how many times do you take a complete seat
out of the car ?

p.s. my wife says I am a legend for not tidy up my shed and computer room lol
