Well this is my first post so please go easy...... I'm look at getting a 147 JTD yes a Diesel, I'm on a tight budget and looking at spending around the 3.5k mark on a JTD.
I've got my little Ducati for real zoom, zoom
I've search though the forum and can't find many posts regarding the 115hp 8v Vs 140hp 16v, anyone driven both, what would you recomend??
I have read you need to change the water pump on a 16v, at the 72k service. Any thing else I need to look out for when buying either alfa.
Thanks for the link Dave, some good info on there, I'm only looking at getting a JTD do people change the water pumps on 8v too. The money I'm spending on a car, it should have already done over the 72k mark. I guess I will need to buy a car with good history.
After I get the car I will look into remaping.......
i believe 16v are problematic not sure about 8v but 16v has updated pump available
lets face it i would replace at belt change for piece of mind, you wouldnt like a full belt change or top end rebuild after say 10k if it failed
good known history from dealer or indipendant alfa garage with reciepts to back up:thumbs:
regards remapped cars i had 156 jtd standard 40mpg and after 50mpg and loads more torque/power:thumbs:
Cheers for the heads up Dave, I look into remapping at a later date, I would mainly want it for smoother power and if possible more MPG like what you have can for.
So is the general consensuses if there similar money get the 16v.
For the same money would you choose the 16v if it had an extra 20k on the clock over the v8?
I have an 8 valave JTD with a remap and a few other mods and it is pushing out just over 170BHP, I changed the water pump and belts as there was only a £30 difference between the 2 kits and whilst it was in bits seemed daft not to.
Iv'e just had my 8 valve jtd 156's cambelt, water pump and thermostat changed for 350 quid all in. Just a local garage in the town but 100/150 quid cheaper than other places.
Lad at work recommended him so was a bit nervous but give the lad his due he has done a fantastic job.
Get the water pump and belts done again if they haven't changed the water pump especially if its 16v, got mine done on the 8v as it was coming up to 5 yrs old.
Also on test drive make sure temp goes upto 90 on dial and does not stop at 70,if it stops at 70 your stat is gone and you will have to factor that into price as well.
I've got the more modern 8v 120 bhp and it's pretty nippy, but if I'd had the choice over total spec of mine (money no object either) I'd probably have gone for the 16v - not that I am unhappy with mine! the water pump issue pertains to plastic impellers which snap off and shred the cambelt - I thought this was only the case on the 16v but I could be wrong - best to check this first, but I don't believe the pump costs too much more to do.
Depends largely on what the car is for; if it's just a daily runner then the performance difference is irrelevant and a well-specced 8v is more desirable than a basic 16v (leather, climate control, sat nav etc). Re-mapping a 147 that's done over 80k is asking for trouble...
FO, I think you right, Re-mapping a 147 that had 80k (ish) would lead to problems. As you would be stressing an engine thats already got a load of millage under it belt and you also don't no the condition of th clutch.
But i guess it also depends on how your drive it day to day.
The water pump (on it's own) takes 3hrs to change and costs around £60. So I'm you would be looking at £200+ to change out.......... (I was looking at a car with its 72k service but they did not change the pump)
1st of all who did belts and if belts are coming off to do pump new belts etc need to be used:thumbs: for your peace of mind:thumbs:
there is an updated pump available from alfa if you look at threads at top of this forum you will see there is issue with these
